At Kunzang Palyul Chöling, we practice the Palyul Lineage of the Nyingma Tradition of Tibetan Buddhism. Here, several pure lineage streams have combined to form a river of liberation teachings, consisting primarily of the Nam Chö revelations of Terton Migyur Dorje, and also including the Longchen Nyingtik lineage of Longchenpa.
In order to practice Vajrayana generation and completion stage practices, you need three prerequisites:
Empowerment (Wong or Abisheka): This must be received in person from a qualified Lama of the tradition. This event occurs when the Lama, embodying the deity, confers the blessings of the lineage of the practice and the authorization to begin.
Lung (Wind transmission): This occurs when the text is read aloud to you by a Lama who has accomplished the practice. By hearing the words of the text, you receive the speech blessings to chant the practice. This can be received by live phone transmission until you are able to get it in person.
Commentary: These are the actual instructions for how to accomplish the practice. They can include the tunes, mudras and instrument instructions, as well as an overview of the history, lineage and meaning of the practice.
After receiving the above, it's your turn to work with the practice, utilize it to deepen, and allow your mind to change.

However, for most of the practice texts it is your responsibility to insure you have the prerequisites, as dictated by your initiating Lama.
